In Dracula by Bram Stoker, they’re a few times in the first 6 chapters that wolves encounter the characters. The first time you read about the wolves is in chapter 1, when Jonathan Harker is riding in a carriage heading to the Counts. When you first read about the wolves and the carriage driver, it seems like the carriage driver is very calm around them. It seems that he has either had encounters with wolves many times before that particular time or simply does not frighten easily.
The second time you hear about the wolves is in chapter 1, when Harker is in a room that the Count had provided for him and he hears them outside. It almost seems like the wolves have followed him from his carriage ride to the Counts house. Harker is curious as to why the wolves seemingly followed him but when he has an encounter with the wolves in chapter 3? he realizes that they weren’t really following him, they were following the count. When he wishes to leave the counts because he has grown suspicious of the Count, the doors swing open and Harker hears the count say “Hark” followed by the sound of the wolves. At this time Harker realizes that the Count has power over the wolves.
I think that the wolves represent Count Dracula’s power. The wolves are intimidating and very powerful, like the count. The Count is very powerful so I think that the wolves respect him for his power. I think that the wolves might also remind him of times before, when he was a king with an army. When he did not control an army any more, I think that he needed something to be able to control. I think that he wanted or needed to be able to have control over something.
