Inquiry #1

Psychology, it is the basis of tricking the mind or body. In the box experiment we had selected a room and placed a box in there. We then had chosen volunteers to enter the room. Once they were in the room with the box they would answer a few question and they would enter the box. Hannah or myself would then tell them that we would be back in 10 minutes and then we would ask them some more questions. In the box, time was fleeing. The 10 minutes that we said we were going to be gone fore turned to 30 minutes, for most people. If the subject had not fully removed themselves from the box in 30 minutes, we would ask them to get out. We then asked how long they had thought they were in there for and why they did not get out. We had changed what we said before we left a few times. I can say with confidence that you first try will most likely need some improvement for success and to take notes during the experiment.

At the beginning of the box experiment we were going to use color simulation. What we were going to do was to paint the inside of the box and have white light in the box. We were going to use either white Christmas lights or small light holes in the box. We would paint the box and wait 10 minutes and see how they felt while in the box. While exploring this idea we encountered some problems. One of the problems was how we would successfully have light in the box. While we could use light holes the subjects might be entranced by the holes and become distracted. The same problem was with the Christmas lights, the subjects would most likely mess around with the lights and as a result our research would be false. Encountering problems with no answer in sight, we were forced to change our idea. We wanted to still do something with the boxes that we collected so we came up with the box experiment.

The changes that we had to make were simple changes. At first we were saying that we would be back in 10 minutes. We then realized that what we were saying was not bringing forth the conclusions that we wished to see and we decided that it was for the best that we change our word content. We then changed to “We will be right back”. We have noted that this wording has brought up desired conclusion. When we were saying, “We will be right back” We got the most people exiting the box. We decided to change what we were saying again, we changed it to “I need to go get the other person, I will be right back and then we can start the experiment.” but sadly we did not get any exciting results.

Once inside the box some peoples actions where very interesting. Some people moved inside the box but a few people did not even move. There were two very interesting times where the people were almost out of the box but not quite. That person started moving around at 5 minutes. He started opening the flap of the box and was very curious to where we were. He then started to investigate the room. When he eventually got out Hannah and I were very interested in what he had done. We think that it was because he was getting bored and was wondering where we were. He was one of the few people who actually removed them selves from the box. Most people were simply moving in the box, for they were bored and anxious to get out. The few people who did not move in the box were fine with staying there. One person wanted to get back in the box and another fell asleep in the box. Many people wanted simply to escape school time.

In conclusion, our experiment was a success we have very interesting data and extremely interesting results. We have noted that most people do not get out of the box when an authority figure tells them to just wait. Some people did however and we then tried to figure out why some people did but most did not. It is very questionable. Psychology is tricking the mind to think something new.
